CHAPTER 14

Mason

I spend the entire time Cami’s gone drumming my hands against my steering wheel. There’s a sensation in my chest and stomach that I’m not really accustomed to but have come to recognize as nerves. It’s a little funny because I can’t remember the last time I was nervous about anything and yet here I am, nervous about talking to Santana.

If she knew, she would never let me live it down. Fuck, if anyone found out, I would never live it down. I’m the confident guy, the one with his head screwed on his shoulders. But now, I’m the one waiting patiently to talk to a girl that’s messing with my head, my heart, and everything I believe in.

When Celia steps back outside the doors of the frat house, Santana’s nowhere in sight. My brows furrow as I consider the implications of that.

“Where is she?” I ask as soon as she arrives.

Our plan was pretty simple. Considering Nick has probably been at her side all night, Cami was meant to make up an excuse and get her to come meet me out here, without Nick catching on. Celia promised she would get it done and it’s disappointing to realize she couldn’t.

“I’m sorry, Mase,” she says sadly. “I really tried, I swear. But as soon as I told her you wanted to see her, she was pretty insistent on not coming. She made it clear she would rather spend her night with Nick.”

My eyes meet hers and I can see genuine sympathy in them. The sight of that does nothing to stave off the pit of disappointment, sadness, and anger that’s gradually enlarging inside of me.

“She would rather spend her night with Nick,” I repeat dully.

Celia nods slowly. “I think you might need to give her up.”

I’m Mason fucking Woods. I don’t give up. But at what expense? Nick’s happiness? The guy has been there for me time and time again, and the one time he needs me to be there for him, I’m acting selfish. Hell, I’m not even ready to sacrifice Santana’s happiness. If they really want each other, then I can’t keep getting in the way. It won’t make it any easier to watch, though.

“I have to get out of here,” I say, ready to start up my car.

“Mase, wait. Let me go with you,” Celia says, and there’s no missing the suggestive lilt to her voice.

I shake my head. “No thanks, Cami. Not tonight. I’d rather be on my own.”

“Alright. I’ll call you.”

She steps away from the car as I start it and drive off. I shouldn’t have come here in the first place. My phone starts ringing a minute or two later and I clench my teeth when I realize who’s calling. Nick’s the last person I want to talk to right now. I send the call to voicemail, but he calls back immediately and I decide it might be better to answer. I park the car at the side of the street before answering.

“Hey,” I say, my voice low.
